Lessons from “The Tiger King” and Carole Baskin’s Digital Marketing Success

Netflix is no stranger to hugely successful programming.  They struck gold recently with “The Tiger King.”  This 8-episode series features G.W. Zoo owner Joe Exotic as the self-proclaimed “Tiger King” and focuses greatly on a rivalry with another tiger-loving enthusiast, Carole Baskin, owner of Big Cat Rescue in Tampa, FL.  The series has been incredibly popular with Nielsen reporting that 34.3 million people watched it in the first 10 days of its release.  If you have not yet seen the series, we think it’s worth a watch – not only for entertainment, but also to get some insight into Carole Baskin and her digital marketing success – mainly through SEO and social media.  Entertainment and education?  Sign us up!

While watching the series, some might say that Carole herself is just as “eccentric” as Joe Exotic.   Regardless of your opinion, one thing is certain – she has the smarts to be on top of her SEO game.  In fact, when searching key terms like “cat rescue” (searched 18,100 times per month in the USA) and “big cat” (searched 60,500 times per month in the USA), Carole’s website comes up on the first page in position #1 in Google.  Carole’s website also ranks in the top position for long-tail (no pun) keywords like “big cats for sale” (880 times per month) and “where can I pet tiger cubs” (70 searches/mo).  For these keywords, Carole is utilizing SEO tactics to rank for keywords to steal visibility from her rival, The Tiger King, to then tell the website visitors NOT to buy big cats or pet tiger cubs.  She has accomplished this through many SEO tactics such as creating unique pages focused on these highly searched keywords and writing detailed, SEO-friendly content with strong word counts.

Carole has certainly not neglected another important form of digital marketing – social media.  A quick look at some of her channels shows that her Big Cat Rescue page has over 2.7 million followers on Facebook, videos on YouTube that surpass 30 million views, and she has even ventured into platforms like TikTok, garnering over 2 million likes in total.  What does all this mean for her business?  While we don’t have access to her metrics, we can only assume that having all those followers translates to plenty of donations and merchandise sales.

So what can we learn from Carole?  We can see clearly that digital marketing is powerful.  It can make a significant impact on your business.  While some of Carole’s techniques may be borderline “spammy” and not recommended, it's evident that time and effort can go a long way when it comes to digital marketing.
