IRCE 2019 – Making the Most of Your Time in Chicago

IRCE @ RetailX is coming up quickly – set to take place from June 25th - 28th at McCormick Place in Chicago.  As Chicago natives, we are excited to welcome the ecommerce community to our hometown for this amazing event!  If you’ve never been to Chicago or are just looking to take in some of the best that the city has to offer, you’ve found the right blog post!

While there will be a lot of great sessions and vendors to meet at IRCE, take some time to explore the great city of Chicago.  Here are some of our top recommendations:

  • Walk/Shop on the Magnificent Mile – located along Michigan Avenue, this bustling area of the city is the perfect place to take in some historic buildings such as the Chicago Water Tower, the neo-Gothic Tribune tower, and many others.  You’ll also find some of the city’s best luxury fashion outlets and brands and top restaurants.

  • Take in the Views – One of the best places to get a bird’s eye view of the city is at the top of the John Hancock Center, conveniently located on Michigan Avenue.  Buy a ticket to the observation deck on the 94th floor for stunning views.

While taxis and ride-share services are plentiful, consider taking some more “fun” modes of transportation.

  • Ride the ‘L’ – One of the fastest ways to get around the city and explore neighborhoods is by riding the CTA ‘L.’ Make life easy by downloading the Ventra app to purchase your tickets.

  • Water travel – Why travel by road, when you can travel on the water?  One of our favorite ways to get around the city is to hop on the Chicago Water Taxi!  Check out details here.

No trip to Chicago is complete without some delicious food and drinks.  As most people already know, the city of Chicago is recognized internationally for its fine dining options.  However, if you’re looking for some quick and tasty treats, here is what we recommend:

  • Giordano’s Pizza – Look no further for some of the best deep dish pizza on the planet.  Giordano’s is one of the most famous pizza places in Chicago for good reason.  Stop by for a slice of pizza heaven and experience it for yourself.

  • Fannie May Chocolate – Does this even need a description?  Fannie May has locations all across the city.  Click here to find a shop near you to pick up a pack of Pixies, Mint Meltaways, or any of their other fine chocolates!

  • Portillos – By far, this is our team’s favorite place for lunch.  Portillos, a longtime client, is the perfect place to grab a burger, hotdog, Italian beef sandwich, salad, etc.  Whatever you get, make sure to get a slice of their chocolate cake for dessert.  You won’t regret it – trust us.  Check out their website for everything you need to know.

  • Take a Boat Cruise – Wendella Boat Cruises are a fun way to take in Chicago’s architecture and soak up some rays.  Explore the options of a boat tour here.

  • Catch some Baseball – Chicago has two baseball teams to choose from – Chicago Cubs and Chicago White Sox.  Both stadiums are accessible easily via the CTA!  Get your tickets and catch a game if you can.

  • Try a Fun Sport – If you haven’t experienced the fun of Whirlyball, try to find time to add this to your list.  The team at Whirlyball will make sure you have a great time zooming around on their bumper-car like carts.  Check out this great company, and client of!  More details can be found here.

We hope this list was helpful as you plan your Chicago visit.  If you visit any of these places during your time at IRCE, be sure to tag us on Twitter (@_Americaneagle.)
