WordPress 5.0 and Guttenberg are Coming!

WordPress has seen rapid growth since its inception in 2003 when it started off as a simple blogging platform for the casual content editor. Now that it is a full-fledged, scalable CMS used by enterprise organizations for custom development, the WordPress community that supports it is looking to keep that growth trend going.

Sometime within the next few months WordPress 5.0 will drop and become available to all users. At present, core 5.0 is only in the late beta phase, but is rumored to be released anytime between the end of November and late January.

The release of WordPress 5.0 will be the single biggest core update WordPress.org has released to-date, or at least the rumors make it seem that way.

Who is this Guttenberg you speak of?

The flagship piece of functionality that rolls out with WordPress 5.0 is the introduction of the Guttenberg Editor.

The naming is not coincidental. It is named after Johannes Gutenberg, the German blacksmith credited with inventing the modern printing press. Accordingly, the WordPress Guttenberg Editor aims to revolutionize the way that site administrators create and edit content.

Guttenberg will replace the typical TinyMCE WYSIWIG editor that has been used with WordPress for years now and will provide users with a drag and drop interface for creating post content. Content will be built by using what Guttenberg has coined as “blocks.”

The idea is that content can be more intricately created by using blocks of content that can be moved around independently of one another – similar to many other page builders in existence.

The large question that still has yet to be answered – and only time will tell – is if site owners will truly embrace the Guttenberg editor in favor of other page builders that have been used for many years.

Preparing for Guttenberg

With this large release, it is anticipated that there will be an adjustment period in which plugin and theme developers will have to make their products compatible with Guttenberg. It is speculated that most are already prepared, but certainly some will need to play catch up.

Those who are interested in testing their websites, plugins, and themes with the new editor can get a jump start by downloading a copy of the Guttenberg editor here: https://wordpress.org/plugins/gutenberg/
